AlpineQuest for sea kayaking

Hi

I’m a new user of AlpineQuest (full version) in conjunction with MOBAC. So far I find it works very well for sea kayaking. I have a couple of enhancement requests which I wonder if you would consider please.

First a little context to help explain why these enhancements might be useful: Whilst sea kayaking we often experience tidal flow & wind. Similar to sailing I expect. The effect of this is that our compass heading is often very different to our gps course line. For example: this past weekend I did a trip where the difference between compass heading & gps course was more than 45 degrees for 5 hours. It’s useful to be able to monitor (& adjust) heading and see the effect this has on our course (& by implication where we’ll be in, say, 30 or 60 mins)

Enhancement suggestions:

1) Please provide a display of compass (orientation) heading & gps speed in the same view. I suggest adding the option to display compass heading in Explorer mode.

2) Please provide a prediction of location at some time in the future, assuming the current conditions remain stable. I suggest making the length of the gps course line proportional to current gps speed, with a user configurable scaling. (I think this has been asked for before - it’s extremely useful)

Thanks for your attention. I would of course but happy to beta test either of these enhancements!

Pete

Hi Pete, sorry for the delay.

Yes I understand your point. Similar features have been requested for flight purposes.

I'll see what I can do for the next update.
1) should be ok. 2) will require more work so I'm not sure I'll have the time for this next one.

Note that you can already display 2 different heading lines for the GPS heading and compass orientation on the map.

Thanks for the encouraging reply ..

Regards the gps & compass line on the map …. yes that’s very useful. The problem is that I often pre calculate the required orientation heading & need to stick to it whilst en-route. I know I can view the compass heading in the normal map view … but then I can’t see gps speed (only available in Explorer view I think) … which also quite useful. Ho hum.

Proportional gps line length … yes I can see that might be more complex. Perhaps that’s why most similar apps don’t have it. There’s a challenge for you! Let me know if I can give my view on how a user might wish to use that.

Many thanks. Pete

Just updated to AQ 2.3.1.r7665 and pleased to see the compass heading in Explorer view! That's an excellent enhancement. It looks to be working as expected. Thank you.

All we need now is a similar improvement in the weather to allow an outdoor test.

Regards, Pete

Great,
I've added the prediction of location in the wanted features list.
