I could swear i remember there was some sort of option to preprocess tracks when you Import big gpx files

Yes, in the past, the application had a setting called "Preprocess tracks" that would detect GPS errors and remove unusual locations while loading tracks (so even before display).
However you cannot imagine how much weird tracks are displayed by the users on purpose, and this process ended up removing data that was in fact important for some users.
So currently it has been disabled, until a better solution is found.
Note that error detection is still done when displaying the statistics a tracks (can be tweaked in the statistics settings), but it does only impact the stats, but now the display of the track on the map (so erroneous location will be displayed, even if not taken into account in the stats).
