I have downloaded MOBAC on my Mac exactly as per the posted tutorial, but when I open it there is no map displayed.

It is version 1.9.16.2

You can try with the last version available in the MOBAC website:
http://mobac.sourceforge.net/
Version 2.0.0 is available.
