AlpineQuest & OfflineMaps

I have three related questions about altitude.

1. When I upload a gpx file to different sites, they give more or less the same readings for distance, but different values for altitude. Sometimes the differences are large. My files are all somewhere in France. Is there a recommended site that's normally reliable?

2. Is the altitude data embedded in the gpx file or is it supplied by the map based on the track?

3. Does the barometer add precision, and if so, does it need to be calibrated?

Hi and thanks for your interest in this application.
1. I tend to recommend http://www.visugpx.com/ to get stats from another source, since you can adjust few settings regarding elevation management. Altitude gain and loss computations can be interpreted in different ways, there is a help page explaining all this: http://www.alpinequest.net/en/help/1.4/ ... statistics.
2. When using GPX files, AlpineQuest only uses altitude data stored in the files. However this data is smoothed as explained in the link above.
3. Yes the barometer does increase a lot the computation of altitude gain and loss (if this one is working fine). When recording a track with barometric altitudes, AlpineQuest allows you to gets stats with or without them to compare. There is no need the calibrate the barometer (calibration is done using GPS altitudes).
