[closed] Android wear 5.1.1: No gps fix

Post by RalphBln »

Hello,

I get no gps with the latest version of AlpineQuest on a Sony Smartwatch 3. According to this message by user "GerdS" on the sonymobile forum the Android Wear update to 5.1.1 broke some gps API, and applications using this API need to recompile their code against the latest Google Play Services libs version (which at the time of GertS's posting was 7.3.0 and AFAIK still is).

It is definitely not a hardware issue with my watch because I get an immediate gps fix with HERE Maps, whereas AlpineQuest sits there for hours showing 0/0 satellites. Also, when I launch HERE maps I can see the gps pin symbol appear on the watch face, which does not happen when launching AlpineQuest.

Would it be possible to recompile AlpineQuest against the latest Google Play Services libraries and push the updated version to the play store?

Looking to buy the paid version because I love the way I can use my custom maps, but in its current state without working gps the app is kind of useless.

Hi and thanks for your interest in our application.
AlpineQuest doesn't use the Google Play Services at all. These libraries are only required when displaying ads or using other specific Google products.
Another comment on the link you gave mention that only using the GPS (instead of network+GPS) did help. You can change this is the app (in the GPS Position details window, click on the top-right settings icon) and select "Outdoor GPS" instead of "Automatic selection". Be also sure that the GPS is activated in the Android settings.
Concerning the HERE maps app, are you sure it uses the GPS and not another location provider? (wifi or network).
Finally, a new version of the app optimized for the last android version is under work. A beta version should be available before the end of the week, maybe you could try it if nothing else helped. Let me know if you're interested.
Best regards

Thank you so much! I completely missed the other comment about using GPS only. I gave it a try and switched from automatic selection to Outdoor GPS in AlpineQuest as you said and behold: it instantly climbed from 0/0 to 8/10 satellites and locked on to my position.

Couldn't be happier! Thanks for your quick and helpful support!

Edit:

Btw. my watch is paired with an iPhone, not with an android phone, which might be the reason the combined method did not work while pure GPS does (iPhone users only get a small subset of the functionality an Android/Android wear combo provides, e.g. no WiFi, no play store and I'm not sure but I suspect also no location data provided by the phone).

Which leads to a new and unrelated issue (which is, however, not severe enough or of sufficient public interest to open a new thread): Now that the problem was solved, I went ahead an purchased a license. Lacking the play store on my watch, I bought it directly from this web site using PayPal. Only after that I read that the app is activated via internet. Now as I said, since my watch is paired with an iPhone, it has no internet connectivity. Is there any other way of activating the software that does not require an internet connection on the watch?

This is not urgent, since my main use case for AlpineQuest is to have a navigation device for cycling. I am not really interested in tracking, or I could use another app for that. So if it's not possible to activate my copy I still have the good feeling of having supported a great software product.

Thanks again :)

Ok it's a great news concerning the GPS fix!
Thanks for your support. Unfortunately right now there is no way to activate the application while being offline. When the new version is released I'll try to find a solution, don't hesitate to email me about that after its release. Until then, I can make a PayPal refund, since you can't activate the app. Let me know.
Best regards
