whole map download

Is there any way of selecting a complete country map for download in one go ?

for example topo map of UK, without actually scrolling all over the country

It depends on the max level of details you want. Each download process is limited to a maximum size.
However you can start the download area process again and again. Overlapping areas will be ignored, so it won't be a problem.
This limit has been set for different reasons: even if it seems 'safe' to have a whole country stored, it consume map server power, data bandwidth, and large amount of data on your device, although you will never use most stored parts of that country...
