[done] Follow path ?

Hi

I'm having problems understanding how the follow path feature works and what it's goal.

On topic [sticky] Summary list of suggested features
viewtopic.php?f=3&t=224
There is an entry that I think is related with the follow path feature that says:
"ETA on a waypoint based on current speed (by Rac here) avail. in 1.4.5"

I can't find this anywhere in the application.

What I am missing?

Thanks
Rac

Hi,
The follow path option allows to do various things, but you're right that it's not really clear.
I'm currently trying to create a new side panel containing all information relative to this feature.

When following a path:
- the targeted waypoint will be updated automatically, selecting a location in the path x meters in advance. So in the compass view, the direction arrow will always show you the direction to take to follow the path;
- in the GPS Localisation details window, an ETA at the end of the path is displayed, using your instant speed and the distance remaining on the path (from the closest location on the path);
- in the GPS Tracker option, is you select 'warn me if I get too far from the path', the tracker will make beeps to warn you that you're out of the path.

Hope it helps.

Here is the online help: http://www.alpinequest.net/en/help/1.4/ ... ollow-path

Best regards

Hi

Last weekend ( using AQ 1.4.10 ) I finally had the oportunity to full test the "Follow path" feature. It was in a circular track, with the particularity of have on the way out and in the return one kilometer in common.
From this experience I have some suggestions I would like to make:

A) As you said in your post, it should exist a dedicated panel/place for all the information/settings related with this feature.

The panel could be located in map view or in location traker view ( between the trak info andthe graph profile ) and should include:
i) the name of the followed track
ii) total distance of the followed track
iii) distance already done and the distance remaining to be done
iv) ETA
v) an icon into the settings:
- the follow path warn distance (removed from "location tracker" settings);
- the velocity to calculate ETA ( our mean moving velocity, last minute mean velocity or instantaneous velocity);
- the same options already available when we choose to follow a path ( loop, reverse, distance threshold ).

2) Probably a small bug
On the common part of my track ( first/last kilometer ) the ETA calculated was function of if I was closer from a way out point or a return point, so the value is constantly changing between, for example, 10 m and 3h20m. I think the same behavior happens with next followed point.

Merry Christmas

Hi

Thanks for the "New follow path side panel" with remaining distance, gain and ETA display.

However, I would like to see (if possible of course), additional information as I mentioned in my last post.

i) the name of the followed track
ii) total distance of the followed track
iii) distance already done and the distance remaining to be done
v) an icon with the settings:
- the follow path warn distance (removed from "location tracker" settings);
- the velocity to calculate ETA ( our mean moving velocity, last minute mean velocity or instantaneous velocity);
- the same options already available when we choose to follow a path ( loop, reverse, distance threshold ).

The bug I mentioned earlier is still occuring:
When we follow a track with common parts on the way out and on the return, the ETA calculated and the showed next point (at green on the map view) should be always the next point in the followed track and not the closest point. As it is calculated now the ETA value is constantly changing between, for example, 10 m and 3h20m, which is annoying and confusing for the tracker.

I hope you could do something about this.

One question:
What is the meaning of the arrows in the panel?

Thanks in advance
Rac

Hi again,
I had to release this version earlier than planned to I haven't added all I wanted.
I'll complete this in the next version.
For the arrows, it allows you to target the next waypoint (more useful when following routes). It was asked here: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1472
Concerning the bug, I understand the problem but I'll need to figure out how to handle that.

Hi again,
I have just released the version 1.4.14 with the following changes:
- "warn distance" option moved from the tracker settings to the follow path settings like you suggested;
- button in the follow path side view to re-open the settings;
- another button displaying the same settings in the Location Tracker if the warnings are activated;
- new "details" button that display more details on the current location of the path: what's have been done, what's remaining;
- fix of the progression estimation when the path crosses itself or goes along another part of it.

The only thing that hasn't been done yet is the velocity setting. Right now, it uses the mean speed of the last 20 locations (the ones displayed on the map when the GPS is activated). This will be available in the next version (I plan to also use the stats from the Location Tracker) to get a better estimation.

Best regards

Hi again,

I tested the follow path "new features" this weekend.
Thanks very much for the added changes, I like them.
The bug I mentioned in my previous posts is now corrected. :D

I think we can mark this topic as done.

Best regards
