[closed] Regression with automatic rotation

Hi,

With version 1.3.11, the zoom level regression has been fixed.
But now, the automatic rotation does not work properly :
- sometimes, even when the orientation (compass) is deactivated, the map rotates following the orientation
- when the map does not rotate with the orientation, the map still rotates with the GPS even if the option has been disabled !
Aargh ...
It's very frustrating.
Regards.

Very strange regression!
I'm really sorry that you are faced to all these issues!
I tried all combinations of rotations related settings today and could not reproduce the problem. Everything worked fine for me.
Did you reproduce the problem?
What is very strange is the compass map rotation with the compass turned off.
I'll have a look at this problem.

Hi,
The compass based map rotation issue is not easy to reproduce.
Conversely, the GPS based map rotation issue can be reproduced and shown easily.
In the attached screenshot, you can see that the option has been disabled, yet the map has been rotated in landscape mode.
Regards.

Thanks for the screenshot!
I think there is a misunderstanding. The map rotation is different from the screen orientation (portrait or landscape).
If you turn the device, the AlpineQuest menu will be adapted to be displayed at the bottom left side of the screen. This is the screen orientation, which is managed by Android himself (you can use applications such as ES Task Manager to disable this feature).
Apart from that, the "screen rotation using GPS" of AlpineQuest is the orientation of the map based on the GPS locations: using last locations, it's possible to deduce the global direction of the user. It's then possible to rotate the map so the direction of the user match the top of the map, like what is done using the compass.

With AlpineQuest, it's possible to rotate the map using the GPS or the compass. Both ways will rotate the map in the same direction, but are quite different in that:
- The GPS rotation is based on GPS locations, and requires that the user is moving. The rotation updates with the rate of the location updates.
- The Compass rotation is based on the magnetic sensor, and works even if the user is stopped. The rotation is updated quite quickly and subject to noises of the surrounding environment.

Let me know if I misunderstood your issue.
Best regards

Hi,
I see. You're right, I've misunderstood the GPS map rotation.
I understand now why the map rotated while the compass was deactivated.
I was walking and the GPS map rotation was activated.
Some explanation in the online help may be useful for other users / newcomers.
You can close this topic.
Regards.

I've just tried the feature and it works quite well :-).
I think it should be named something like "Rotate the map following the track" instead of "Rotate the map (using GPS)".
This would make it more self explanatory.
I've made accordingly a change in the French translation.
Regards.
