You could always turn your labels display off first which might help

However, I agree that it might be an idea to have the option to display a thin white border line around the selected area for the duration of the download.

Yes you're right Yamble.
You can also close the "Store area" view, it won't stop the download.
I myself never display so much things at once anyway...
