[closed] Track format conversion

Post by Anton »

AQ offers .trk as the default track export format. Google earth does not recognise this (simply ignores .trk files) and other converters (e.g., http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/) produce an error message (e.g., "no header row", or simply "don't recognise this").

Can we have a means of:
(a) setting the default track export to something else (such as .kml), and
(b) re-importing a track back into AQ so that it can be converted to, and exported in, a different format?

I now have a number of .trk files, moved from my SGSIII to my desktop, which it seems I now cannot use.

Or is there another way of doing it?

Hi,
You won't be able to read .trk files with other softwares however you can easily convert them into GPX format as explained here:
http://www.alpinequest.net/en/help/1.4/ ... gpx_format

You can see here why the GPX format is no more used by default: http://www.alpinequest.net/en/help/1.4/ ... lpinequest, however you can still easily export tracks to the GPX or KML format.
Best regards

Thanks for that.

Yes, I know I can export in formats other than .trk but my problem now is that I had already exported as .trk, and then moved those .trk files from my device to my desktop, and erased them from my device.

They are therefore no longer on my device.

Is there a way of re-importing them into AQ, so that I can perform the conversion (to KML) there, and then re-export?

You can copy your .trk files back to your device like any other files (plug your device as an USB mass storage to access it like an USB key).
Then you will be able to browse them using the AlpineQuest landmarks explorer, and convert them to the GPX format using the method given above.

You won't be able to convert them to the KML format, however most applications reading KML files also accept GPX file (like Google Earth). If you really need KML files, you can use an online converter to convert your GPX files to KML files.

Let me know if you have any issue.
