Weird behavior:
Start on the default world map, zoomed out all the way. Start swiping and panning north, and keep swiping - you can just keep going off into nothingness forever. Shouldn't it stop once you get to the edge of the world?

Yes you're right that's a strange behavior!
However there is a reason for this: this is due to the default world's map projection: Mercator. With this projection, the more you go up on latitude (or down), the more the map is precise, without never reaching the poles (90°)...
Maps using this projection are usually limited from -85° to +85°, but not AlpineQuest, that why you seems to go beyond world's edges
