You can open most tiff images if you have the "tiff support" add-on.
Some tiff with rare compressions may not be supported.
If your tiff is geo-referenced (i.e. when it's a geotiff) it's displayed correctly on the map.
If it's not (just an image), you need to manually calibrate it using the "image calibration" add-on.
