Regarding custom variables, the documentation

perhaps should mention if one can move them outside of
the '<zoom-levels>' tag, or even the '<source>' tag,
so we could use the same definition for more than one
'<zoom-levels>' or '<source>'.

The <expression> tag and custom variables can only be used inside the zoom levels definition (i.e. a <zoom-level> and <zoom-levels> tag).
