When browsing online Opentopomap , I see many "connecting", "queuing"...
Maybe the connection could be held on to longer ("keep alive"?) in between tile fetches, so the app doesn't need to reconnect?

Yes unfortunately the OpenTopoMap server is very busy those days...
"Connecting" simply means that the application sent the request for the data and is waiting the response from the map server. Maybe "Waiting answer" or "Processing" would be more appropriate.
