Currently, the compare slider, just switches between two extremes without actually gradually fading it all.
I thought sliders were usually used to gradually do things.

Yes, this is the intended behavior.
This is a compare tool, so it switches the map and does not fade them.
The slider is useful when you compare multiple maps (you can compare how many maps as you want).
If you want to shade from one map to another, it's possible, you can edit the opacity of the top map (Maps menu -> Displayed maps -> Edit opacity icon of the top map).
