Maps are imported into pieces of 256x256 px images, so if the width or height of the original image is not a multiple of 256, then the right and bottom most pieces contain an empty area.
With the default settings this area is transparent (so invisible), but if you force the app to use the JPG format (that does not support transparency), then it's displayed black.
