Pictures taken as picture waypoints are stored in the pictures folder as normal .jpg files.
It would be a nice feature to retrofit any pictures on the map, (as long as the exif data was stored), even those that were not taken with the Alpinequest app. Is that possible?

Yes absolutely it would be possible and a nice feature to have.
It has been requested a few times already (see "Display image with geotag exif on the map" here), I'll do my best to work on this quite soon.
