trk and gpx

Post by j_cocker »

AQ seems to save tracks as 'trk' files by default.

I use MemoryMap on a PC to view and create tracks, and as far as I can tell, it does not support trk files, but supports gpx. I often forget to change the format from trk to gpx before saving... I am then left with a file that I cannot use, and haven't found a way to save it again as a gpx file.

My questions are:

1. Is it possible to have an option in AQ to set the default saved track format to gpx instead of trk?
2. Is there a way, once a track was saved as a trk file, to also save it as gpx?
3. Is there a (preferably free) windows-based tool to convert trk files to gpx?

and a last question:

- Would it be possible to add the option to 'share' a track, i.e. it would open a window with options to share it using email, WhatsApp, etc with others?

Many thanks in advance.

+1 for me to get possibility to record in gpx format by default directly.
Maybe a user setting should be enough for that ?

Hi,
This has been already discussed on this forum but here is a fresh new answer.

The GPX format is an exchange format (the X stands for it), it's very limited in features and cannot be used as a "default" format. That was the case in early AQ versions only for the worse. GPX is non appendable (to add a single location or change a single name character you must read all the file, make the change then write all the file). This is time consuming and battery draining. GPX is a "human readable" format, the machine must interpret everything, very long and battery consuming. GPX is very limited, no styling, color, icons, pressures, etc.

The good news is that you can simply convert your tracks to/from GPX using the app: https://www.alpinequest.net/en/help/v2/ ... ded_tracks and share them to your favorite app.
Do you like AlpineQuest ? Leave a small comment on Google Play !
