[closed] Waypoints

Post by RichWiltshire »

Hi

I am using the AplineQuest on my Android Device for which many thanks.

Today I had a list of waypoints from a walking guide I wished to enter to create a route.

Is there a way I can type in the waypoints in to create the route? When I tried I found that I could only create a waypoint by going to the point on the map which since I didn't know exactly where the waypoints were (except by numerical coordinates) was not much use to me.

Have I missed something?

Grateful for any tips and advice.

Cheers

Hi,
Here is how you can proceed to achieve what you want:

Search locations:
In AlpineQuest, you can only save waypoints from the center location.
To move the center to the location you want to save you can use the search feature:
- Open the search dialog (Menu -> Search or use the Search button of your phone if any), select the format (for example Degrees-Minutes-Seconds), enter the numerical coordinates and validate. The map will move the the location. You can then save this location.

Single waypoints:
Once the center of the screen is located on the place you want to save, use the "Create landmarks" tab at the top right of the screen. Open it and click on the "Create Waypoint" button. You will then save a single location. You can do it for all the places you want to save. You can find online help here.

Grouped waypoints:
If you have the full version, you can group waypoints in a single file, to display them together on the map.
After having saved a first waypoint, go in the Landmarks Explorer (Menu -> Landmarks), long-press on the newly saved waypoint (you need version 1.1.1), and select "Browse". This will open the waypoint file, and allows you to save other waypoints inside it. Return on the map view, and use the "Create waypoint" button again.

Routes:
The creation of routes is documented in the online help.

Hope it helps,
Regards

Thanks for your prompt response.

I hadn't picked up on the search feature before so that is useful...However I have a series of GPS Waypoints which I would like to enter and come in a format which is not deg, mins etc. Example: SX 759 767

Is there a way to enter waypoints in this format? If not would it be possible to add this feature to the to do list?

The rest of your explanation was clear and understood, thanks. (I have the full version.)

Hi,
Your coordinate seems to be in the OSGB format. Right now it is not possible to search this format.
What you can do is to convert them using free online tools like this one: http://www.obliquity.com/astro/osgb.html.
And to enter the converted coordinate in AlpineQuest.
Note that as explained by cpf here, with 3+3 digits like in your example, the point has a poor precision (~100m).

I'll add the support to search OSGB coordinates directly.
